Dog training, pet sitting, and dog walking have been sucking up enormous amounts of my time, not to mention my regular full-time job!

As a result, I need to take a leave of absence from my Carson volunteer work. It breaks my heart to do it, and I miss the place, but that's the way things are for now. Should business dry up, with no hope of salvaging it, I'll be happy to return to Carson.

If you want me to contact you if and when I should return to Carson, shoot me an email and I will make sure to stay in touch. Just visit my Dogmation website for contact info.

I hang around the South Redondo Beach Petco store and there is a chance I might teach puppy classes down there. So feel free to look me up there too.

All the best,
SusanDog Ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02608954012368866755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299417659107814730.post-80934833714521588372007-12-21T22:03:00.000-08:002008-12-10T13:18:37.691-08:00Happy holidays to all
We, the dogs here at the Carson shelter, want to THANK YOU for supporting our shelter with donations of blankets and towels and toys and everything else you give us!

We thought you'd like to see a photo of Christy, one of our vet techs. My card says Hold, but if you're interested in me you should ask about me anyway.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbpEaW6EFHdSrOwXJqtesW3VOgsOOYyGwfvHl3ldba9yE3BfuMQlp8RFiseOuxvIr-amh5dAguRNgW29OT3krzbU3XEUTk360Sfa3Oms47FfmYtrE7wFG6Ilw7g27aJSWb16ogsKtZokdu/s320/rico1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146661919641461746" />

When Susan the dog lady came in to my cage to get acquainted, I greeted her with a lot of rambunctious jumping. Normally when that happens, Susan stands in the corner and turns her back to the dog. But she felt my claws catch on the pockets of her pants and she was afraid I would shred her clothes. So she turned around and raised her knee toward her chest each time I jumped. After she did that about 3 times, I got the message.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigVHLze6WQfY67Ab1JrOn88VJipfbwETu1Ljms9o8pg4nejUbf2tnBl4elBUEdxYW5Qoj_D_lKhDtVaUcAQyK6DZfeNo7_7EbtsSrjtfjf9_PKB_02yDyqvraajVJltuvET1EuYAU5kqGL/s320/rico2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146662615426163714" />

I wasn't easy to take out of the cage. I am not used to walking on leash with a training collar very well, but Susan would just stand in place until I would settle down, then take a few steps forward at a time. Eventually, we got to the back. If I started jumping again, Susan would keep the leash very short and just lower her hand closest to my head toward the ground, pulling the leash down with it.

Susan treats all the dogs she takes out to a laundry room excursion to smell the dirty laundry, and I was no exception.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKv8LfnkyjlmGKPd9FQ29_xJkBcFZOD6VyjEDOy3V2Y8mciy9iI9knaVSUzGsvX_FwEvpGCJVvX904nqtMdgPwNKCsiTs-DnfPfBCtpTgq336Qw72yIGgKK6JscFrMSehyphenhyphenMYVdfffHFm5I/s320/rico3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146663306915898386" />

Susan just LOVES this last photo of me. I am a 1 year old blonde German Shepherd mix, brought in on November 5 as a stray. Right now I live in C221.

Susan was busy doing tons of laundry in the back, so it was kind of dark by the time she took me out. We went in the back play area, and she let me chase some squeaky toys. She walked me around the shelter a few times, and I thought the loose roosters were pretty cool! I wanted to chase them, but Susan wouldn't let me. Finally, she took me in to the laundry room. I just plopped down on the dog bed Tricia was on, and I stayed there while Susan started another load of laundry.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirfoP_oI8UNbCd_Z-WhXZjvRAcVTCdkKitq7UFk9uLhppkdRQbXS68JtRtZ2WjReJTVEiVRzsKW1LhMk8nzFGTlOurH_yCcvP01A_jMROlsWKEiMzGU6FM-MB3GHU9XlLBeEHgFkHrAo7-/s320/jilly1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142182408592044722" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX_ObhjU0YQGyg8TEWEBsqrEdR-5baNQ9NDcx1jUsbKLgrn-8kwLdmRxL4rXN9gg2rrH3GVpD_v-g0NZGlyblxzI8TOdJx2MAdnhVrhzt8WVMd6t2WYgdjoau5UcsEZUt3DI-xQQ74Ak20/s320/jilly2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142184006319878850" />

Susan says I am a beautiful, friendly girl. Susan the dog lady named me Tricia. I came in on December 9 as a stray, so I'm not officially available for adoption yet. The shelter thinks I am 2 years old. My kennel card says black and white Shepherd mix, but Susan wonders if I am part Australian Shepherd, part Pointer or Dalmatian! You can see I actually am tri-colored, but I am mostly white. Right now I am living in C134.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifAvsZ9xxpO3tmjV1Ey02FMVwRWimRLSabSz01gBjgf5XtGdSeQugEFBFnqGm3d0dpL2y-nkmhNkJpm2F7Uuuxm5KqYU7sjtPL4-KT8TVH3mlW7tjmBOk2CDH23LpYO38HXAE89EspHzoe/s320/tricia4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142174407067972162" />

Susan swiped my fur with her furminator and immediately discovered flea dirt and live fleas! So after walking me around a little bit, she put me in the tub.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8K6WVWZtkAlxZlPsPVENmVCoujZgwpcsv9YNZJvrL45hg4BatR2AizYgscQ48z3V29ekRj_LfwoEJsVXDCPN-R4IHTjd1xQ-8Ur3FTO3wHfVwHlqPsGVGm6URhmuZcnb-k64ewAT_ik_4/s320/tricia5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142175180162085458" />

I didn't like my bath very much. After struggling a little bit, I decided to cooperate. It wasn't obvious, but I was very dirty! Susan gave me a basic shampooing, a flea shampooing, creme rinse, and a final rinse with some vinegar in the water. She said, "Tricia, you are such a beauty!" At one point I threw up during my bath! But Susan cheerfully cleaned it up.

I really liked being toweled off. The dead fleas kept coming off on the towels. Susan let me lie down on a dog bed in the laundry room while she cleaned up after the bath. She gave me some water, then a little food. I ate about a third of a bowl, and that was enough.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlDRc1sJXWpvWVFWAtMZe__qhCdC6svyvDSDwC8Ycg7-wo3u_FnRDd68GcDpHp4IYq5HhUAfgYTheYuzF6-FcGeeioO87S80s5TzoO27bg8TI1HCUiB1Hep1SlAvWYseY3qFvng_yqTVan/s320/tricia7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142177151552074338" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7UhiLYmFjsFpNwpoCCAi6btx5zh6yx962WSnYzSFEJKatvVRpLJWRTk31sYOVRUaAfCYqw1K9pFAEztoc0vTi2hvoemw6T_JLBW4cBS0yeJbBIV6h5EGxESbvzc8r3k6DZIEe-UXG1FTS/s320/tricia8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142178392797622898" />

Susan says I look really pretty now, and my fur has a gloss to it. But if you still want to donate blankets, please contact the Carson shelter and ask to speak to Officer Tammy Howlett first, or go down there in person and talk to her. She is the officer who has been hauling the donations to the back every night. She's putting blankets away in hidden spots that most volunteers and shelter workers aren't even aware of.

This scene is becoming a nightly occurrence. This is behind the office on Thursday, December 5, where another load of blankets has been dumped. According to Tammy, a moving truck came earlier that day and left a load of used moving pads.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKjR-YcjO5I2NqgffZ-PUus6uX4nVO4BJh9XRUk_JveYMLN2KpxLH9d-RUV8A2NAh_2x5sRgq2VdwlDSFJXDV2EV9ofxb2WMyymN-0WnZQAl_AlhbgloWq0h2BNK8DxCMYYjU8Af44-_NA/s320/anotherload.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141462653677613602" />

This is in the back, just outside the laundry room. The door is holding back a tsunami of blankets that have been piled on to the grooming tables. If the blanket rack looks like it's getting empty, that's because the blankets out in the kennels haven't been picked up yet.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg63uQHhvm-JBrn5z4LNSq3e2dq1Rs5D8iL7rMbjziIOZepLADsL8V4eSQIDzs2dcVUzmdDec56hmk5u28RW8uaL2KGBeICNEw4W9wEKKGN2yfUKX2qMXXs_kqOmiwIXa1JQuQHAmqmERvc/s320/laundry2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141461700194873858" />

And these photos don't show where Officer Howlett and others have been stashing extra blankets. The laundry room is the only place with blankets readily accessible to me as a volunteer.

This is the laundry pile now after I spent the evening picking up blankets in buildings 1 and 3. Putting out blankets and quilts in each and every cage usually doesn't work very well because bored dogs love to shred them. That stuffing and shredded fabric often ends up in the drains and risks clogging them, which isn't fun. By the way, you'll notice a second washer and dryer stack, next to the blanket rack. That machine has suffered from overwork. And there is another washer-dryer set in the back which I did not photograph, also dead from overwork. That's another reason why putting out blankets and quilts in each and every kennel doesn't always work.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikEiJFesqZSU9vnaGMi2UkloK_ndKqoAs99xzQ7B2QKHTLBSyPuANJm7Y9n8r95PhyphenhyphenG8ITgE_fNjZ7MJtTvXkPJLEbQQe_8OvHfOTso6IezMI1nV-sytwdZlU880BUkROwGSo8cV8vHXUJ/s320/laundry3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141461571345854962" />

Certainly, efforts are made to put out blankets and quilts for puppies, pregnant/nursing dogs, and fragile, sick and elderly dogs. But each kennel contains an air vent, and warm air gets blown through the vents every night. In addition, the dog building doors are kept closed in the evenings to help keep the warm air in. Because of one misleading news story about a dog freezing to death, I am wading through all this trying to help get this under control when I would like to be showing animals to the public or doing other things for the dogs. We need this to be under control so we can readily access grooming supplies, toys, and other things we keep back here.

I won't disagree with anybody who says these dogs need more systematic and regular medical care. But I don't think putting a blanket in every kennel is necessarily the answer.
Dog Ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02608954012368866755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299417659107814730.post-28310074582081620802007-12-07T19:47:00.000-08:002007-12-07T20:43:35.741-08:00Giving to the Los Angeles County Shelter System
The Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) charitable foundation that supports the animals served by the the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control. The Animal Care Foundation most directly benefits those who adopt animals from a county shelter by providing the funds for low-cost spay and neuter programs, making the adoption fee very affordable.

The Animal Care Foundation runs several funds by which you can support its work:

If you would like to make a recurring donation to the foundation, you can sign up as a Faithful Friend.

To help animals with serious medical conditions, you can donate to the Dreams Come True fund.

To help animals that were left behind or separated from their owners in a disaster, you can contribute to Noah's Legacy.

The SAVE (Spay, Adopt, Vaccinate, Educate) program makes low-cost adoptions and microchip clinics possible because of your donations.

You can also give gifts in honor of or memory of to special people or animals in your life, and the foundation can send you information on trusts and wills.

The Castaic shelter kennels are being refurbished because somebody remembered the Animal Care Foundation in her will. The Baldwin Park shelter got "waterless grass" in their dog exercise area thanks to donations from the public.

The Los Angeles County shelters are "meat and potato" animal shelters running on shoestring budgets, and they don't obviously benefit from the glitz and glamor of celebrity endorsements that some rescue groups enjoy. The animals at the Los Angeles County shelters really need your monetary support! And remember, your donations are tax deductible.
Dog Ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02608954012368866755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299417659107814730.post-50617047673788580852007-12-05T10:53:00.000-08:002007-12-05T18:00:34.531-08:00The Dogs of Carson have a message for the public...
Hello! We want to thank you for all your donations! The Carson shelter is being inundated with blankets, far more than the shelter can use. So please - keep your blankets, or maybe take them to another animal shelter or donate them to a rescue! If you happen to have an old blanket or two that you want to give to Carson, fantastic, but right now there is no great need for big loads of blankets.

The stories in the news about dogs freezing to death are highly misleading. Because of these stories and the resulting inundation of blankets, staff and volunteer resources that would otherwise go toward showing animals to the public or otherwise caring for dogs have had to be diverted to cleaning out storage rooms and finding places to put these blankets.

Each kennel has a heating vent and the shelter blows warm air through those vents every night. In addition, shelter doors are closed after closing to help keep warm air in.

We have plenty of boxes of toys, lots of balls, and food and treats. If you would like to help us out, please donate things like liquid detergent (preferably unscented) and liquid bleach to help us keep caught up on our laundry. Newspapers are always appreciated for the cat cages. Most valuable of all would be the gift of your time. Perhaps you could become a volunteer. Even if you can't spend time here at the shelter, perhaps you can foster an animal in your home.

You can find out more about volunteer opportunities here. Be sure to get in touch with Ken Kramer. Thanks so much for your gifts, and have a great holiday!
Dog Ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02608954012368866755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299417659107814730.post-53161552521789751792007-12-04T20:47:00.000-08:002008-12-10T13:18:52.290-08:00Bambam - A3481824
My name is Bambam. Susan the dog lady named me Nanoo. I am 5 year old male Alaskan Malamute. I am very cool looking with one blue eye and one brown eye. I came in as a stray on November 26, and I live in building 2.

I am like a big teddy bear. My fur is very thick and makes me look bigger than I am. George the shelter worker brought me in, and he told Susan that I am a big baby.

Susan had a hard time getting pictures of me, but she managed to get a few. At first I wasn't very good on a leash. I kept wanting to just pull ahead!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvafHP7Zy4cUPy2k5P7VevNZS2yZi-RUycx0LKXmw2CGrGdP-krrEge0Ltih24SX5E0FzAp-mHPUAZD2ZKHPAVtJE8G56e_pbKBBvTAuR21CpBoDxGGWTxgF-LkieFi8CFrybM8ugDhLCI/s320/nanoo1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139586083681743266" />

Susan spent a lot of time furminating me. She practically filled a trash can with my loose fur. It felt really good, and at one point when she stopped I started to whine because I wanted her to do that some more!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiab0ZplkyaHX_y4DRAOUssiDZrdoSD9xKjntnf9qOJhy2lVexZNq0PP6U7f4chyYf4BgvQKZ0tHB351nji_DgcQtWtnGOiUAwSQfER0r6GlP4IXY4s7gaI0hY4Ucqv1IuTduDOqZ9eWl_r/s320/nanoo2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139586916905398706" />

I spent quite a bit of time with her on the leash and we walked around the shelter several times. I was a bit better at walking with her after we practiced for a while.

I would love to have a good home with somebody who can appreciate a big teddy bear like me. Please come down and say hi and consider adopting one of us dogs.
Dog Ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02608954012368866755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7299417659107814730.post-71418905221504353232007-12-02T19:21:00.000-08:002008-12-10T13:18:53.270-08:00Brenda - A3756626
Susan the dog lady named me Brenda. I am a black and white Labrador Retriever mix, about 2 years old. I came in as a stray on November 28 with a puppy that looks a bit like me. We live in building 2.

I don't like being kenneled very much. I "argue" with the dog next door to me a lot! Susan was wondering if I was as tough as my bark indicated. So she came in to the kennel to get me and I shut up immediately.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2SZX2bg50wrzsotN18HY6ghPysE8j-bJFr8n0WZl_cZx8Aj2rX-yZB5zLnHFoEkr_6BTG23G-6zc2SEvBYMZ_QfE9fvgbk3ITpuXNUDA98JB3lvejj5P2R_vLYIraSPaD_gdOwDFsUR-R/s320/brenda1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139583072909668738" />

I walk very well on a leash. Susan walked me around the shelter several times. She thought my coat looked a little dusty so she ran the furminator down around the base of my tail. And she found fleas! She said, "Brenda, you're getting a bath!" Uh oh! I hate baths!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ_7LVwz-6L8BS1NNqV2C1iVumK6OvBP_7T7VEbGe8OgdkLBCtURpkvsYLjC0Fh320Lg2baKQJpAiNw_mqAUAu8Vzpgcp8QJVy41PKdgx8lbyZzpfs7G57CNdV2OjMoH3yUkYdOQaxB_Iy/s320/brenda2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139583425096987026" />

The sudsing part wasn't so bad, but I hated getting water on me! What kind of Labrador am I anyway?!? Susan said that at least I didn't cry and whine while we were in the grooming room. Man, I got water all over the place though. Susan got soaked. But she got me clean! And I really liked being toweled off.

I don't like being locked up here in a kennel. I can be a pretty good dog if I have enough exercise and attention. I am a 4 year old Golden Retriever / Shepherd mix. I was owner surrendered on October 31. She was really glad to be back. I was the first dog to greet her, so she decided to take me out. As it turns out, I walk pretty well on a leash.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIanBRcTSaNo9a7eh0yzEXcxjGDSW6OFBlbOlhnUcdPdprEAkXLU7JkqGyjzzPdSVbAejwmAb8g-7wNNhfe3vmPdtRFOwVEYTAM-tZ0-6BctlBByqLAGeTFAoAPwP7Wy92xgC_KyPel1MU/s320/molly2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139580672022950258" />

Susan gave me a major furmination.
